What to See

The Hotel Cristallo is ideally located in the central area of the Lido, the beach of Venice, which is not far from many interesting sights worth visiting, and offers a great number of activities to do.

The Venice Lido is an Island which separates Venice Lagoon from the sea, and it is divided in 3 areas:

San Nicolò (St. Nicholas): the northern area of the Island, with Nicelli Airport (only for private flights), and the church of San Nicolò, where an ancient Benedictine monastery was built in 1053 to preserve the remains of the patron saint of seafarers.

The present church and monastery date back to the XVI century, and display works by Palma il Vecchio (Palma the Elder) and Palma il Giovane (Palma the Younger).

Near the church there is the Jewish cemetery, which is one of the most ancient in Europe. It dates back to 1389 and tourists come from all over the world to visit it.

Strolling along Lungomare D'Annunzio, the seafront promenade, visitors can enjoy the view of the Lido beach, one of the most exclusive in the area. The clean beach with its fine sand and the bathing establishments with their particular huts make this place absolutely unique.

The Lido beach has been awarded the prestigious blue flag of the FEE (Foundation for Environmental Education) for the quality of its water, its services, safety and environmental culture.

Visitors can find the planetarium, which can be visited during opening hours, halfway down the promenade.

Santa Maria Elisabetta, in the central area of the island, is an elegant tree-lined avenue with many boutiques, shops, hotels, and restaurants. The Cristallo Hotel is located about halfway down this avenue.

Going further down the sea front promenade in the central area, visitors can see the famous Hotel Des Bains, where Thomas Mann, the writer, used to stay and where he set one of his most famous novels: Death in Venice.

The promenade will lead you to the square in front of the Casino, which had here its first Venice seat, and whose Imperial style is unmistakable. Next to the Casino, there is the Palazzo del Cinema, where the International Film Festival takes place every year, an irresistibly appealing and popular event for directors and stars, for people working in the film industry and cinema lovers from all over the world. After the Palazzo del Cinema, there is the famous Hotel Excelsior, with its Moorish style, which was built at the beginning of the 20th century by Count Volpi di Misurata.

Afterwards, there is the third area: the ancient village of Malamocco (Metamaucum). It was founded between the 5th and the 7th century AD by the exiles escaping from the Po Valley (the plain originated by the Po River) as a consequence of the barbarian invasions. Malamocco can be considered one of the most ancient settlements in the entire lagoon of Venice, and it was home to the Doge's seat (the Duke, governor of Venice) between 742 and 812 AD.

Among the most important sights of the village, there are the church of Santa Maria Assunta (XII century), the palace of the podestà (15th century) and Malamocco fort.

Apart from the great number of international events, the Lido is also the ideal place to practice a great variety of sports: ranging from one of the most exclusive courses of golf in Venice, the 18-hole Lido track considered one of the best in Europe, to sports to practise at sea. In fact, the beaches offer services such as the hire of pedal boats, small sailing boats, catamarans and canoes, as well as a scuba diving school and the possibility to take part in guided diving sessions.

Moreover, there are many spa centres, gyms, swimming pools, tennis courts, archery centres, leisure centres, as well as the possibility to practice football, basket and rugby. A further option is that of hiring a bike for a tour of the island, to see its different architectural styles, which range from Gothic to Art Nouveau, to the modern architectures created by the famous architect Carlo Scarpa. A relaxing moment could be sitting and having a sandwich and an aperitif in one of the bars of the island, or lying down on the beach in one of the huts available for hotel customers.
