St Mark's Square

St. Mark's Square is just 15 minutes away from our hotel in Venice Lido

Seaside and beach holidays or a classic Venice culture trip: Hotel Cristallo is the right place to stay.

In fact, Hotel Cristallo is among Venice Lido's hotels boasting the best location, as it is situated close to Venice Lido water bus station: this means you can reach several interesting sites within the Venetian Lagoon, starting from Venice historical centre and unmissable St. Mark's Square, of course.

Venice St. Mark's Square - history

As any thousand-year site, the present world-renowned layout of St. Mark's Square in Venice is the outcome of infinite events.

Just think that prior to 826 - when St. Mark's Basilica was built to host the mortal remains of the Saint, taken from Alexandria, the square was mainly occupied by a vegetable garden, crossed by the Batario stream and other canals.   Imposing St. Mark’s Basilica itself was altered several times, including the third reconstruction in 1050-1094.

Over the following centuries: stream  Batario was filled up ; St. Mark's Square was embellished with fine marble following the conquer of Constantinople achieved during the Fourth Crusade; brick paving was laid; the  Procuratie Vecchie buildings were erected together with the Clock Tower. The latest significant alteration to St. Mark’s Square consisted in the addition of the Napoleonic Wing.
Perfect location
Great hotel in a perfect location on Lido di Venezia. Good breakfast, bread rolls, speck, cheeses, yogurt, cake, coffee, juices. Overall an excellent choice. The two Andreas are wonderful. Ask for restaurant recommendations--they will put you off the beaten path to places only locals go, which will keep you away from the tourist traps and you will eat very well.

St. Mark's Square and the Carnival of Venice
The Carnival of Venice is one of Lagoon’s top events and St. Mark's Square is virtually one of its hearts.

It is meaningful that the traditional volo della colombina (the dove flight or angel flight) dates back to the Serenissima Republic days. Such ritual symbolises the presentation to the Doge of the sceptre used to declare the official start of the Carnival.   On such occasion a person in the flesh (a dummy in the past) flies from the bell tower (among Italy's tallest) to the Doge's Palace or to the middle of the Square, before the exultant crowd in an impressive atmosphere.
St. Mark's Square Bell Tower

Tourists may consider it just one of Venice's stunning monuments but it is means much more to the locals, who have nicknamed it el paron de caxa (the master of the house).

As it measures roughly 100 metres, it is one of the talles belfries in Italy as well as an extremely impressive feature in St. Mark's Square.  It might seem incredible, but in 1902 it collapsed. Luckily, given its position, nobody was seriously injured.
